Burton Street Community Peace Gardens is so much more than a garden!
It’s the neighborhood’s outdoor living room & art-filled greenspace nestled in the heart of the historic Burton Street Community in West Asheville, NC. We are part of the vibrant heartbeat within this diverse neighborhood–reaching out with food, art, garden plots, economic opportunities, activities, education, and a place to meet your neighbor.
Each year, we start seeds, grow plant starts, cultivate beds, and grow food with and for the greater Burton Street & surrounding neighborhoods. Join us when you can! We’re usually in and around the gardens on the weekends. And look for fun-filled events in the gardens throughout the year!
We’ve been cultivating community by cultivating food since 2003. Everything we’ve done grows out of the motto: focus not on your obstacles, but your creative maneuvers around them.
The early 2000’s marked a difficult time in our neighborhood, as well as on the global landscape. It wasn’t uncommon in our neighborhood to see drug deals take place on the street in the middle of the day, trash lined our streets, and folks felt safer behind closed doors than outside with their neighbors. And, it was during this same timeframe that the U.S. government actively engaged in the wars against Iraq and Afghanistan.
Feeling the full weight of the state of our neighborhood and world, we decided to be part of the solution. With the support of Bountiful Cities Project & several hard-working neighbors, we broke ground and started growing!
We are grateful for the amazing partnerships and friends we’ve made through the years, ’cause we wouldn’t be who we are without y’all.
It makes our hearts sing to see folks drop by and wonder through the gardens…to catch friends napping on the swing…to share stories as we sit by the fire pit…to cook and eat together from the wood-fired cob oven. Hope to see you soon!
